Bathroom Renovation Ideas
Planning your bathroom renovation – things to consider
- Do you need to change the size or shape of your bathroom to make it more functional?
- Would you like your bathroom to be practical or a place to escape?
- Know your style – is it traditional luxury or modern luxury?
- Do you need a bathtub, and if so, would you prefer an oval tub or a spa?
- What style of fixtures, fittings and furniture do you want – traditional or contemporary?
- Do you need dual basins or just one?
- Is water efficiency important to you?
- How much storage do you want in your bathroom?
- What do you want to be the main feature in your bathroom eg. a great bathtub, basins, mirror or shower etc?
What we need to know
- Size of your bathroom
- Height of ceiling
- Floor structure (timber, suspended concrete, concrete slab on ground)
- Can your bathroom be accessed from under the floor?
- Wall structure (timber stud walls with hardiflex fibre cement, solid brick with render)
- Fixtures presently in the bathroom
- Proposed fixtures to go in the bathroom
- Type of shower screen required
- Amount of tiling you require (eg. wall tiling to ceiling or just skirting tiles to walls)
Colour and style tips
- Black and white, or neutral tones, are the most timeless colour options and can be easily enhanced by introducing colour in your towels and bathroom accessories.
- Latest trends emerging from Europe indicate the return of colour in bathroomware, including black, blue, red and yellow! But remember that brightly coloured tiles and cabinet finishes go in and out of style.
- Consider selecting tiles and benchtops of the same colour and/or product as those used in other renovated or newer parts of your house, to continue the theme.
- Flow complimentary colours from your master bedroom into your ensuite.
- White gloss tiles and white gloss cabinet finishes are always in style when used correctly.
- Good quality chrome tapware and accessories always look great and are extremely durable.
- Coloured tapware and accessories look nice new but are fragile and mark easily.
- Dark coloured floor tiles look great when new, however, you need to be diligent with cleaning.
- Bathroom furniture such as vanity basins need to be in scale with your bathroom size. For example, a small bathroom with an oversized vanity will look cluttered.
Practical tips
- Walk-in showers in small bathrooms don’t work, they need to be screened.
- Hobless showers are not a problem when constructed correctly.
- Showers with hobs can still look modern and stylish when made with polished stainless steel.
- Stainless steel hobs are the most effective way of containing water along the bottom of the shower screen.
- Concealed stainless steel shower trays are a lifetime guarantee that your shower recess will not leak again.
- If you have existing timber window in a shower recess, or intend putting a shower recess adjacent to an existing timber window, the whole window reveal should be waterproofed and tiled. Remember that timber is not practical in a wet area.
- If using tiles on the shower recess floor, keep the tiles to a maximum size of 150mm. If they are any larger the tiler will have difficulty achieving a good consistent fall to the floor grate.
